Fairfield Allotments | Lancaster

Welcome

Fairfield is a large allotment site in Lancaster, UK. The allotment association (Fairfield Allotment Holders Association) has looked after allotments on the site for over 80 years. The site is slightly under 5 acres and has 67 allotments. The vast majority of these are let as halves.

The allotment is self managed by a team of volunteers, as are most allotments in Lancaster, the council act as our landlords.

It is a popular site and as such has a very long waiting list of over 250. The list almost doubled during and after the pandemic as people recognised the value of some outdoor space for excercise and well being, as well as growing fruit and veg!

If you would like to join the waiting list, would like any further info, or you would like to update your contact details then please use the contact form or the contact button below.

Other allotments sites are listed on the council website here, some may have vacancies. Our waiting list alone suggests that there is a need for more allotment provision. The National Allotment Society suggests...

"If there appears to be no allotments in your area, then we recommend you find five like minded people who would like an allotment and are on the electoral roll or registered council tax payers. Then individually and collectively, submit a formal letter to the local council. Send one (you can put all six letters in one envelope) by recorded delivery and one hand delivered, with at least two witnesses present. All local authorities have a mandatory obligation to provide allotment provision under Section 23 of the 1908 Small Holdings and Allotments Act."  "The Society recommendation is that authorities should supply 20 plots (or .5 hectare) per 1,000 households."

We're very proud to have been awarded an Awards for All grant to help improve our site by building some raised beds for better access to a range of growers.

Fairfield Allotments are now part of the Food Futures, Closing Loops composting network also supported by the Lottery Community Fund
